The company
Mackays is one of the largest, privately-owned fashion retailers in the UK. We were established in 1834 and have been selling quality clothing for more than 50 years. The current fashion chain has grown organically from a small family business initially consisting of only six shops! Year on year we consistently increase our operating profit and 2005 saw a 15 per cent increase on the previous year's operating profit with a gross turnover of £161 million. Our philosophy is to provide high quality fashion at affordable prices in nearly 300 M&Co. stores throughout the whole of the UK, from the Shetland Isles to Penzance! This network of stores is continually upgraded and we currently refit 30-40 stores every year - this keeps our stores looking fresh and exciting for our more than 10 million customers who purchase more than 21 million garments per year! The product
Currently we provide a range of departments, such as Ladieswear, Plus (for sizes 18-28), Petite (for ladies 5'3" and under), Lingerie, Menswear, Kids, Kylie & Homeware. Our Kylie range for fashion-conscious girls aged 9-13+ years is bolstered by our leading teen website, which receives more than 250,000 visitors per month interested in reading our interactive e-zine full of fashion, beauty and lifestyle advice, not to mention games and competitions. As a business, we care about the quality we offer our customers and do not reduce our quality to meet price demands. We currently source our products from more than 20 countries worldwide to give customers the best quality offering at affordable prices. In order to fulfill this function we employ more than 80 people in design, buying, product sourcing and quality control. We actually design, specify and control the manufacturing of all of our 4,000 own brand lines. This also means that our promotional garments in-store always represent a genuine reduction on existing pricing - no way do we buy inferior quality for sales! The people
We like to encourage our staff to develop their skills through training and that's why training programmes are available up to NVQ Level 5, focusing on practical and management skills. We also offer a fast track manager's program in addition to a Graduate Training Scheme. By doing all of this, for the third year running, we were awarded the prestigious Scottish National Training Award, making us the only company ever to achieve such recognition three times in succession - not that we're boasting! We currently employ more than 2,700 individuals - 'individuals' being the key word! We have around 2,400 staff in our network of stores, 90 working out of our London Buying office and 150 in our Inchinnan Head office in Scotland. Astonishingly, almost a quarter of our staff have been with us for more than 10 years, with some outstanding individuals having worked in the company for more than 30 years. For this very reason, Mackays is known for fostering a friendly work environment, which quite clearly transmits to our loyal customers. Traditionally our stores are actively involved in their local community and frequently hold fundraising events throughout the year for our corporate charity, Breast Cancer Campaign.
