Home Corporate Information > Green is the new black

Green is the new Black at M&Co.

M&Co. is making every effort to do their bit for the environment and giving more thought to how each of the Company’s resources are currently used in order to maintain them for future generations.

This is the case across all aspects of the Company from the products offered in our M&Co. stores and online to the practices within our Head Office. In addition, the Company has also dedicated a great deal of time and effort to various charities, in an attempt to try and enhance the current and future conditions for those less fortunate than ourselves.Click here for more information on the charities supported by M&Co.

So, what is M&Co. doing as a company to help the environment?

Organic Products
A number of organic products were launched within our stores last year and various departments aim to launch more within the next year. So far, organic t-shirts have been launched in Ladieswear using a slub organic cotton and organic cotton nightwear including a nightshirt and pyjama set have also been launched by our Lingerie department.

Bamboo Underwear
In 2007 M&Co. launched a range of bamboo underwear which will be further extended in 2008 due to its success. Bamboo is a sustainable raw material; the fabric is made from the fibres of bamboo making it not only incredibly strong, but also very soft and comfortable. It is extremely breathable and with natural anti-bacterial properties is a fantastic fabric for those with sensitive skin. Click here to view our Lingerie ranges

With a large degree of focus being put on the use of plastic bags by retailers and various initiatives being introduced to encourage the use of 100% recyclable packaging, M&Co. are proud to announce the launch of the 100% recycled, reusable bag. The 'Love our planet' shopper is made from 40% Jute - a sustainable natural fibre,60% GREENSPUN recycled plastic bottles and lined with cotton, making it extremely durable, allowing our customers to use it again and again. Priced at £4.50, this practical product is sold at no profit to the Company and what's more it's great for the environment. Click here to purchase a 'Save our planet' bag

Kylie Earth Girl

In an attempt to educate and encourage the younger M&Co. customer about the importance of being environmentally conscious, our Kylie team have an eco-friendly clothing range named Earth Girl which includes organic cotton t-shirts featuring slogans such as ‘Don’t be mean keep it green’ and ‘Get on your bike and recycle’.Click here to view our Kylie range

Minimising the use of plastic

M&Co. has also made a conscious effort over the last year in relation to recycling both in stores and within our offices. The polythene used to cover garments that are delivered to our stores is now being recycled, almost all of our stores now return their polythene for recycling. Within our new Head Office, all waste paper, plastic and aluminium is recycled and recycling bins are located within each department to encourage our staff to make the conscious effort to recycle their rubbish. Not only does this help the environment but the aluminium cans collected are donated to a local children’s charity with 1p per can being donated. Paper carrier bags were also introduced in to our stores at the launch of our Ladies Boutique department in September 2007, allowing us to move away from plastic bags and take another step towards offering fully recyclable options in our packaging.

Reducing the consumption of energy

Steps are also being taken to decrease the total energy consumption both instore and in our offices and a number of small measures have been implemented, which over time will hopefully have a considerable impact on the energy that we consume. Within all new stores, more efficient lighting has been installed with all lights being activated by motion sensors to avoid inappropriate use of lights. These lights are also more energy efficient as they operate on 35watt bulbs as opposed to the usual 70watt bulb. Motion sensors have also been installed in our stockrooms to stop lights being left on.
